1922, Johnny Weismuller, aged 18, swam the 100m in under a minute (58.6 sec).
I’m assuming no one else had ever broken the one-minute 100m swim before.
Doesn’t roll off the tongue like “the four-minute mile”, does it? Still, I think Mr. Weismuller made more of a career out of this then Mr. Bannister did of his feat.
